The time is now for CLT in Australia

“Timber is the new concrete. The vast potential and versatility of engineered timber holds the key to construction for the 21st century, just as the 18th century was about brick, the 19th steel, and the 20th was concrete.” Alex de Rijke of London-based architecture firm de Rijke Marsh Morgan Architects.

Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) reduces the embodied energy of buildings because it is made from a natural product. Timber absorbs carbon, pulling carbon dioxide out of the air when a tree is growing.

Each tree’s carbon is retained in the timber we process, markedly reducing or removing altogether carbon dioxide pollution that is created by traditional energy intensive manufacturing of building materials such as steel, concrete and masonry.

“A hectare of pine forest extracts 10 tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere every year.* Myers/Goreau 1991
